A Little Boating Fun

Skipper's Corner - 7 Tips to Get Your Boat Ready for the 2013 Boating Season

This time of year always brings a smile to my face.  The boats are coming out in full force.  Feeling the warm sun on your face just melts all your worries away.

Another way to avoid those worries is to prep your boat now for a full season of family boating fun.  Here are 7 tips you can use.  (I'd love to hear your Spring Checklist for your boat):

1.  Buff and Wax - Why not start the season off with a fresh coat of wax and remove some of the scuff marks from last season.  It will keep your gel-coat nice and shinny plus make it easier to clean thru the year.

2.  Remove the Unnecessary Weight - Over the years, gear pills up in our boats.  Take some time to remove everything and sort the items that just aren't needed or worn out.  Removing this extra weight will also provide better performance and fuel economy.

3.  Inspect Engine Compartment - The spring is a great time to double check those little things that can become big things if left unattended.  Check the easy things like belts and hoses, hose clamps, wires, etc.  If you notice any leaks or fluid in the bilge or worn areas, have them addressed before they become a lost day of boating... or worse a day of boating turned into a tow into the dock by Sea Tow, Boat US or a friendly boater.

4.  Inspect Canvas and Bimini Tops - Checking seams and water-proofing each season will keep your canvas lasting longer and looking better long term.  Get to that tear or worn section early to avoid having to replace the full canvas.

5.  Inspect All Safety Gear - We know mold and mildew can ruin a life jacket so be sure to inspect all your safety gear to start the season.  That includes the fire extinguisher, horn, VHF radio, flares as well.  And for the fair skinned boaters, throw a new tube of sun screen in as well.

6.  Inspect All Systems (hot water heater) - Our cruiser and Yacht owners have a few other areas to consider when getting ready for the season.  If you're water system was drained, be sure to put in fresh water and inspect the entire system, including the water heater.

It never hurts to exercise the generator, bilge pumps, sump pumps, heat and AC as well to ensure your first night out on the hook goes without a hitch.

7.  Check Registration and Insurance is Up to Date - I know it's a little thing but keeping all your up to date paperwork on the boat can save time and headache during a safety inspection.  As a matter of fact, I prefer to have an inspection done right away for the season to save time in the heart of the season.

8.  Check Your Drain Plug Before Putting in the Water - Most boaters have done it at one time or another so I add it as an extra.  Don't forget your drain plug!

Of course, if there is anything I can do to make this an amazing boating season, give me a call or drop me an email.

Meet Hall Marine Columbia Team Member -
Johnny Preston
I'd like to introduce you to Johnny Preston.  I believe our longest tenured 'Boat Lover' here at Hall Marine.

Johnny has done it all for us here including Service, Delivery Captain, Transport and All Around Jack of All Trades.

Usually you'll find Johnny behind the wheel of his big Freightliner Truck moving a boat between our 6 locations.  Doing odds or ends around Lake Wylie Marina or other locations.

When not messing around with boats, Johnny is messing around with his bees.  A member of the Charlotte Honey Bee Association, he has been raising bees and producing some delicious honey for many years.

With an estimated 1,000,000 miles of towing boats, almost all of our boats have been behind his truck at one point or another.  Maybe even your boat at one point before delivery.

Check out Johnny's saying on the back of his truck... "Haulin' Boats Cause I Like To!!"
